About Bruce Repei
Canadian artist, Bruce Repei spent most of his career working commercially as a Designer and Head Scenic Artist in the professional theatre. Previously, he studied fine art, drama and commerce in university in the US as well as in Canada. He later did a Masters Program in Theatre Design at the University of Calgary.
After a successful career in sales in Hamilton and Toronto, Ontario, he left to pursue work in the theatre as a scenic artist and designer. He started at the National Ballet Company of Canada, then moved to the Canadian Opera Company , both in Toronto. He was the Head Scenic Artist for two large regional theatres in Calgary, Alberta for four years. Moving back to Toronto, he headed scenic art departments in large commercial scenic shops producing scenery for a wide variety of venues in Canada, the US and abroad. He has more than twenty Head Scenic credits on Broadway. Other credits include THE LION KING (Toronto and Los Angeles productions), MAMMA MIA (Toronto and US tour productions), LORD OF THE RINGS (Toronto and London) and Andrew Lloyd-Webber's THE SOUND OF MUSIC (Toronto).
Set and lighting design took him to regional theatres in Canada as well as for cruise ship entertainment. He has done art direction and design for TV commercials, industrial shows and for Paramount theme parks in Toronto and the US.
In 2008, he retired from full time scenic work. He continues to do theatre design on occasion and tries to concentrate on doing his own painting.
Bruce is a native of Hamilton, Ontario and lives there with his family. He has a studio in the James Street art neighbourhood there. Thirty years of working in stage design and scenic art has influenced his own work in a helpful way. Having spent the early years of his life in the country and on farms in the Niagara Penninsula, he has a deep feeling for the landscape and trees as well as the shore. He works in watercolour, acrylics and oils, choosing the medium and style to suit a given subject. His output of work shows an appreciation for a variety of subjects and treatments.
Taught stagecraft and scenic art at the college level and for the last nine years has taught a weekly painting class at his church's community centre as well as art classes for kids' summer day camps.
